It really doesn’t matter if you surf or not.  When you’re at the beach, do what the beach lovers do—surf.  Or at least try to learn.  Here are the top 20 surf spots that will definitely quench your thirst for an endless summer of beach waves and sandy shorts.

1. Sri Lanka:  Arugam Bay
Want to surf with wild monkeys and elephants? Sure you can.  Okay, so maybe they can’t join you as you tackle the waves but they do peek from the nearby forest.

2. Taiwan:  Fulong Beach
If you find yourself in Asia and you’re new to the whole surf culture, best to try the waves in Fulong Beach.  The waves are just high enough (one to two meters) for beginners and intermediate surfers.

3. Phuket, Thailand:  Surin Beach
From Taiwan to Thailand, the surfing culture isn’t just about the waves.  The picturesque opaque waters of Surin Beach in Phuket plus a serving of street stall pad thai make a perfect beach bum summer.  The nightlife adds to the excitement too.

4. United Arab Emirates:  Surf Pool at Wadi Adventure
Surfing Magazine editor-in-chief Taylor Paul has called it “the best wave pool in the world”.   This wave pool in Wadi Adventure resorts creates powerful left, right, and even waves.  While many pro-surfers first shunned the idea of artificial waves, this particular surf pool has successfully converted many.

5. Buxton, North Carolina:  Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Its off-putting nickname ‘The Atlantic Graveyard’ traces its roots to the numerous shipwrecks caused by dreadful hurricanes.  Despite it all, the area retains its reputation as a popular surf spot since the 1970s.

6. Fuerteventura, Canary Islands:  The Bubble
The superb right-hand tube is perfect for intermediate and pro surfers.  This head-high to double overhead surfing waves are quite common to most islands in the Canaries, but The Bubble in Fuerteventura seems to be everyone’s favorites that locals sometimes dislike having to share their prize waves with visiting surfers. But if you do find yourself successfully tackling a wave among many surfers in the waters, enjoy.

7. New South Wales, Australia:  Byron Bay
Do you dream of beach waves, sandy shorts, salty hair, and nonstop reggae music?  Head to Byron Bay!  Aside from the cool surfing vibe along the 70-kilometer sandy beach, there’s also a sunken ship to be explored.

8. San Diego, California:  Black’s Beach
Enjoy some West Side hospitality and head to Black’s Beach where locals go for some major surfing action.

9. Oahu, Hawaii:  Pipeline
Ah, the famous Pipeline of Hawaii.  It has been called the “granddaddy of all waves” because of its perfect crest.  From beginners to pro-surfers, this is the one wave that surf lovers have all dreamed of catching.  Found in the home of modern surfing, Hawaii, the Pipeline is one of the best and heaviest waves in the world.  Being able to ride this wave is a badge for every budding and professional surfer.

10. Maldives:  Pasta Point
A list of the best surfing spots in the world will not be complete with mentioning Pasta Point in Maldives with its 100-meter tubes.  However, unlike other surfing spots, these magnificent tubes are available only to the guests at Dhonveli Beach Resort and Spa at $340 a night.

11. Cornwall, England:  Watergate Bay
If you’re looking for a surfing spot with that captivating English vibe, head to the less crowded Watergate Bay in Cornwall.

12. France:  Biarritz
When in France, do surf.  The waves at Biarritz continue to draw locals and foreigners since the 1950s.  Back then, this stylish beach town in France is a popular vacation spot for the French nobles.  Today, it has evolved into a surfing capital where you not only enjoy the waves at the southwestern coast of France but also the renaissance vibe of the whole town.  Vacationers who frequent Biarritz can be compared to the affluent townies of Riviera, so better suit up in designer gear.

13. Vancouver Island, Canada:  Tofino
When we think of Canada, we always think of the cold weather.  So when you surf, it is important to don the thickest wetsuit you can get your hands on because the water and the breeze can get really, really cold.  The beach waves at Tofino are not the only things that are worth capturing.  The rainforest that surrounds the area is just as amazing.

14. Brazil:  Sao Francisco do Sul
When you’re vacationing in Brazil, donning at bikini sometimes feel like mandatory, especially when you’re spending at day at Sao Francisco do Sul where many surfing contests are held.  Nice bars, beach bodies, tasty local food, and hazy sunset, you just know you’re in it for a good time.

15. Tavarua Island, Fiji:  Cloudbreak
Warning:  these ferocious waves are for experts only.  If you’re an intermediate surfer, don’t every try.  Waves here can reach 10 meters in size and hold for almost 500 meters.

16. Malibu, California:  Surfrider Beach
They don’t call it Surfrider Beach for nothing.    Miki Dora and Johnny Fain both tackled the waves here in the 1950s and the crests continue to lure surf lovers from all over the world.

17. Sumba, Indonesia:  Nihiwatu
One of the many things that travelers love about Indonesia is its exclusivity.  Unlike other beaches, Indonesia offers many private beaches where you can just chill and tackle the waves all by your lonesome or with your close group of friends all day long, without having to deal with irate locals and annoying beginners.

18. Siargao Island, Philippines:  Cloud Nine
Again, a surf spot list is not complete without the Philippines’ Cloud Nine on the list.  Exclusive to fearless professional surfers, the spectacular waves crash head on to sharp corals.  Many surfers suffer ripped skin and bones as they collide with the ocean bed.  Tackling these so-called “death rides” is every pro surfer’s challenge.

19. Southern Oaxaca, Mexico:  Puerto Escondido
Easy on the margaritas and piña coladas and head to Puerto Escondido where surfers enjoy a long surf season from March to December.

20. Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia:  P-Pass
