Movie Date: Why So Curious?

Words by Katherine C. Eustaquio

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live life backward?
We die first; get death out of the way. We wake up in a nursing home; eat three square meals a day; play checkers; knit sweaters, and learn to play the piano. Then we leave to work and see the world. We fall in love. We go back to college; party like crazy; smoke; drink booze; play hanky-panky. We go to prom and experience high school in reverse (what could be scarier?) We go back to grade school and bring an apple to our favorite teacher every day. We study till we’re young enough to play Barbie dolls and Building Blocks. We become babies and drink Promil every day. And then we finish off as an orgasm.

Last night, I went to the press screening of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button—a 2008 adaptation of a short story written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1921. The film is about a man named Benjamin Button who was born in his eighties and ages backward.

Set in 1981 New Orleans and into the 21st century, we follow his extraordinary tale of discovery, adventure, sadness, love, and death. Starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, the film was directed by David Fincher, who was nominated for Best Director – Motion Picture in the Golden Globe Awards.

The Good: It’s an emotional film but it will also make you laugh. It tackles life’s greatest lessons with dramatic flair. The movie was well written. The actors played their parts beautifully, particularly Brad Pitt, who, I think, delivered his best performance to date. The film was expertly directed. Two thumbs up.

The Bad: The film runs for more than two and a half hours. It’s quite long, so bring two buckets of popcorn.

The Verdict:
It’s one of the greatest movies to date. You’ll leave the theater rehashing at least five scenes before you reach the nearest Starbucks too, well, talk about it some more. I recommend this film to all of those who are tired of watching the lame entries of the 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival. Pardon my French but save your brain cells okay?

The Must-See: Brad Pitt in his early 20’s. Hahaha.
