Poor marketing skill is one of the reasons why even some of the best products and services fail to survive in the competitive market. The sad reality is that most people think that marketing is all about handing business cards and posting flyers on lamp posts. It’s definitely more than that!
Good marketing and advertising skills have a lot to do with how you communicate with your existing customers and how you reach out to the potential ones. Your personality greatly affects the way you market your products and services as well. Here’s a list of effective marketing tips to help expand your small business.
Know Your Product and Service to Communicate Effectively
First and foremost, know as much as you can about your products and services so you can introduce them to customers in the best way possible. Use simple language when talking to customers and take it easy on the jargons and technicalities to avoid any misunderstandings. The same goes for making advertisements. When writing sales copy, avoid plagiarism. Don’t bombard your promotional materials with too much text or highfaluting words. Keep it simple. Print only the important stuff. The rule of the thumb in copywriting is that the lesser the words, the bigger the impact.
Keep Customers Happy
Aside from offering quality products and services, keep your customers happy and coming back by going beyond average service. Double check the items for any damages; do something extra like giving small free items and gift certificates; and have the initiative to make follow-up calls for any inquiries or promotional or new items you have on sale.
“Consistency is the Key”
Some products and services are seasonal, but the important thing is to be seen on a regular basis. Say, people might remember needing new rakes for the fall season but they might not remember which store to get them at special discount prices because they don’t know what’s new and what’s happening in your business. Be consistent in reminding your customer base about your products, services, and special promos for every season. It doesn’t have to be on a daily basis, rather, keep them updated with promotional messages online—it’s free, it’s fast, and it’s convenient!
Work on Your Business Image and Customer Niche
When your small business is faced with numerous competitions, you must decide on what image you want your customers to perceive about your business. Do you want to be known for your low prices, high quality products or services, or the one with the most selection? In business, it’s also hard to please everybody. So, instead of trying to be everything in one time, focus on what area you want to specialize in and what types of customers you want to seek out and retain.
Study Your Non-Buyers Too
Data on consumer behavior of buyers are crucial in marketing. Having a good grasp of your target market allows you to focus on the factors that influence them to patronize your business. But what about the non-buyers? What are the factors that influence them not to buy? Do not neglect them in the research and make it a point to study what keeps them away. Once you understand how they think and function, you can tweak some changes in order to transform them into potential customers.
